An exhibition featuring Perfume, an artist group celebrating its 25th anniversary in September 2024, was held at Toranomon Hills Station Tower TOKYO NODE. This interactive exhibition recreated Perfume’s groundbreaking live performances, showcasing their remarkable “physicality” combined with cutting-edge technology and stage design. The exhibition was directed by MIKIKO, who choreographs and directs Perfume’s performances. Installations were designed by Daito Manabe and the creative collective Rhizomatiks.

This installation uses approximately 3,600 spheres to depict the silhouettes of Perfume’s three members in an “A-pose.” Multiple lasers project 3D silhouettes, while reflections from mirrored floors and LED lights create mesmerizing visual trails. The lasers move in sync with multi-channel music, delivering a dynamic experience that seamlessly integrates visual and auditory elements.

Music used : All past songs
An exhibition-style installation focusing on “choreography” inspired by song “lyrics,” interwoven with dynamic language.
A video installation that compiles and analyzes 25 years of Perfume’s choreography and lyrics into a comprehensive database.

Music used : FUSION
Perfume’s three members performed remotely from Tokyo, London, and New York, with the live footage broadcast in real-time. Based on this performance, a new work utilizing Volumetric Data was created for the exhibition. The live footage, previously viewable from only one direction, was now presented through a triangular prism projection, allowing for a multi-angled viewing experience. Additionally, lighting synchronized with the venue enhanced the light and shadow effects, offering the audience a deeper sense of immersion.

Music used : Mugenmirai
An interactive artwork that allows the audience to experience the laser effects of Perfume’s 2018 live performance, “Reframe,” from the perspective of the members. Using motion capture technology, laser beams track audience members holding small markers in real time. The light trajectories from the live performance are also recreated, enabling the audience to feel Perfume’s intricate and delicate synchronization.

Music used : STORY
This installation, based on Perfume’s performance of “STORY” at SXSW in 2015, offers an interactive experience where visitors can step onto the stage and be composited into a virtual space. Depth information of the visitors is captured by multiple depth cameras, and the data is converted into 3D Volumetric Data, allowing for a new kind of performance that transcends the boundary between the real and the virtual.

Music used : Macaroni
In this installation, the lighting and visual effects used in Perfume’s live performance are recreated to allow visitors to experience it from Perfume’s perspective. Using pre-recorded Volumetric Data of Perfume, when a visitor steps onto the stage, their own shadow projected on the floor suddenly transforms into the shadow of a Perfume member. Regardless of the visitor’s movements, the shadows of Perfume begin to dance.

Music used : edge
The space of GALLERY-B, at a certain time, transforms into a show that fills the entire area with a single track. Presenting a live performance that transcends time in one space is a unique and unparalleled production that only Perfume can achieve. Visitors are overwhelmed by the dynamic flow of time. The experience begins with a countdown and leads into a performance synchronized with the track “edge.”

Music used : IMA IMA IMA
Perfume’s new song “IMA IMA IMA,” released to mark the group’s 25th anniversary, is premiered for the first time within this space. The installation invites visitors to actively participate in shaping Perfume’s future together with the artists.
The environment is designed to evoke a television music program studio. In the foreground, an interactive control panel equipped with buttons and levers allows visitors to manipulate stage lighting and visual effects in real time. On the display, avatar versions of the Perfume members are composited via AR onto an otherwise empty stage, enabling audiences to experience and enjoy the performance in a new, immersive form.
