An installation using rapidly blinking LED lights. The internally illuminated spherical balloons appear as simple white lights to the naked eye, but when captured on a smartphone camera, various colored stripes appear due to the rolling shutter effect. By wirelessly controlling the blinking intervals of red, blue, green, cyan, yellow, and magenta LEDs in microseconds, various patterns emerge. While the lights may look white to the human eye due to the afterimage effect, they actually flash patterns at speeds far beyond human perception.

Although LED balloon installations are sometimes presented as “media art,” this piece encourages viewers to realize what they usually don’t know by capturing the work on their devices and “seeing the unseen.” This piece visualizes phenomena that are imperceptible to the naked eye using accessible technology.
