The new installation by Rhizomatiks was first showcased at the norm Art & Design Festival 2022, held over seven days from August 6 to August 12, 2022. The venue was W Osaka, Japan’s first W Hotel, a luxury brand by the world’s largest hotel chain, Marriott International, which opened in the Shinsaibashi district in Osaka.
Around 50 light-emitting devices were installed in the courtyard bar area on the 4th floor of W Osaka. These devices reacted to an original soundtrack created by Nosaj Thing and Daito Manabe, synchronizing precisely with the music. Additionally, three LED Robots roamed autonomously throughout the space, with LED patterns that also synced to the sound. This created a light installation where the entire venue responded to the soundtrack.
This work was presented as part of Rhizomatiks’ ongoing research and development in environmental design systems for public spaces, such as acoustics and lighting. They will continue to explore the possibilities of technology and artistic creation through the regular creation of installations at W Osaka.
